MotoGP™ roared again for the first time in three weeks calling the summer break off for good after a busy Thursday at Silverstone, as premier class teams revealed their special liveries to celebrate the 75th birthday of MotoGP™. It was revealed that Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 will display a white livery with old logos from key partners on Sunday’s race, but until then, it was on their respective red RC16s that we saw Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernandez return to action on Friday morning.
Finally reunited with his GASGAS RC16, MotoGP™'s sensation Pedro Acosta kicked off the beginning of an important second half to his rookie season. With already a good experience in the premier class alongside the big dogs, the shark will have bigger dreams for himself, and he started his British Grand Prix in a positive way. In the morning Free Practice 1, the rookie already demonstrated descent form with a competitive pace as his fastest lap of the session in 2’00.052 placed him eleventh, just 0.669 seconds off the leader, not bad for a first try in Silverstone. In the afternoon, the sun surprisingly shone all through the one-hour Practice session. As the main focus was to develop a decent race pace ahead of Sunday, the final quarter was dedicated to the time attacks, as usual, and times went down for everyone. With eight minutes left on the clock, Acosta was in P10 with an improved lap in 1’59.183. The rookie strategically positioned himself behind Aleix Espargaro, and was on a really good pace. He improved to 1’58.833 in his penultimate lap, but then lost a bit the rhythm in his last flying lap. He came short to make it in the top 10, and finished 13th, meaning that he will have to go through qualifying 1 on Saturday morning.
On the other side of Red Bull GASGAS Tech3’s garage, Augusto Fernandez was getting back to it too after a summer spent at home enjoying family, friends, and training under the sun of Balearic Islands. In Free Practice 1, Augusto’s best of his sixteen laps was a 2’00.695, placing him sixteenth while being just 1.312 seconds from the fastest, Jorge Martin. With that in mind, the Spaniard headed to Practice with good confidence as he aimed to continue reducing the gap to the others. We saw him progressively improve throughout the session, and he eventually reached his best with a 1’59.835 on his fifteenth lap. He closed the session in P20, 1.924 from the top, and he will join his teammate in qualifying 1 tomorrow at 10:50 local time (GMT+1).
