#AustrianGP - August 18, 2024

That’s the Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich wrapped up as MotoGP™’s main showdown took place at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, with Francesco Bagnaia mastering the race, leading from turn 1 all the way to the end. Both Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 riders finished in the points on Pierer Mobility’s and Red Bull’s lands, with Pedro Acosta finishing 13th of an intense 28 lap-effort, and Augusto Fernandez in 15th.

A quick warm up of 10 min, a bike-swap practice and then it was already time for the main race. Under similar  – hot – conditions than yesterday’s sprint, Pedro Acosta was again starting from P14. The rookie took a decent start to power himself up until P11 as he gained three positions in the first lap to position himself behind Pol Espargaro, helped by the Marc Marquez-Franco Morbidelli contact at the race start. Quickly though, Marquez was starting to recover, and Pedro dropped to 12th. At the front, Bagnaia had already made the gap ahead of Jorge Martin, who was followed by Enea Bastianini. After a few laps, Acosta had Pol Espargaro in his sight line, with just a small gap to make up for, however the Shark was riding faster than the #44. On lap 5, Morbidelli overtook him, as the Italian was also coming in hot following his earlier incident. He found himself in 13th for a while, until we started witnessing a drop in his lap times. On lap 9 he moved down to P15 with a an 1’32.437, which allowed the riders behind to pass by. However, the rookie quickly regrouped to move up to P14, helped by Jack Miller’s mistake. As the #31 appeared to continue with the struggles, it allowed the riders behind to close the gap, including teammate Augusto Fernandez who found himself just behind. Progressively though, Acosta’s pace increased a bit again, and he was able to overtake Raul Fernandez on lap 22, a position that he settled in until the checkered flag. That’s three points scored for Pedro Acostas as the rookie drops to P7 in the riders’ championship after Binder’s top 5.

Hoping to do better than yesterday’s sprint, Augusto Fernandez was ready for a new fight when 2pm came. Starting in P16, the Spaniard was up in P15 charging on Raul Fernandez after one lap, but shortly after Morbidelli was coming back in full force and overtook the #37 without any trouble, and then we saw him being overtaken by Miguel Oliveira. 17th after five laps, Augusto progressively settled into a more competitive pace than yesterday’s sprint, trying to manage the tyres drop as the race went by. His teammate’s drop gave Augusto the opportunity to spend a few laps behind the rookie as both were riding at similar lap times. Augusto was going to finish in P14, but a late overtake from Takaaki Nakagami saw him cross the line in 15th, and score one point.

Next on for the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 squad: the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragón on August 30-September !

"It is difficult to explain what went wrong today, it was a really tough race. We had some issues that we weren't expecting, but it is difficult to explain yet what happened. Let's analyse everything, try to understand what we can improve. This round is going to be tough for all of us involved to swallow, because we had higher expectations, but the whole Pierer Mobility group is pushing hard for our MotoGP project, so I know that we will be at the front sooner or later. The test team is going for two days in Misano next week, so let's wait and see what we can find, and hopefully we will be arriving in Aragon with fresh ideas!"

"Austria is always a tough race as we have to manage a lot of the drop of the rear tyre, and basically survive through. I was able to do most of the race with Pedro Acosta as he struggled too today, and it was quite interesting. Overall I am happy to finish in the points in the end after we were able to be a bit more competitive than the rest of the weekend.

Team Manager
"It was probably one of the most difficult weekends of the season for the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 team. We knew that not having any rider go through Q2 would make the whole weekend more difficult, and it is what happened. Pedro Acosta was starting from P14, and it is always difficult to approach the top 5 when you are that far. He did not have the speed he wanted in Austria, and it will be very frustrating for him. We have to focus on what are our weak points at the moment, and turn them into assets to turn things around. If we look at Brad Binder’s race, there is room for improvement for us, so we are going to work hard to try to fix our issues. Augusto Fernandez gave us a good fight today, was in P14 until the last lap, and then finally took a point in 15th. There are positives for him to take from today’s race, so let’s take them, and feed from them for the future.
