The preparation work for the 2025 MotoGP™ season continued all day long on Thursday at the Sepang International Circuit, with Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Maverick Viñales and Enea Bastianini completing day 2 of the Malaysia MotoGP™ Test, respectively taking 16th and 17th of the timesheets after a total of 112 laps done between the two of them.
After a really positive day 1 in Sepang, Maverick Viñales continued his testing program, going out on track for the first time at around 10:30 this morning. Conditions were different than the previous day, much hotter because of a scorching sun, absent on the first day. Top Gun’s mentality was to continue taming the RC16 machine, understanding its limits, as well as starting making some adjustments on the setting itself to maximize the feeling. Halfway through the day, the #12 had already completed a total of 36 laps with a best in 1’58.924. With the conditions much more difficult to handle than yesterday, the Spaniard stopped a bit before 1pm for a lunch break. At 15:29 to be precise, Maverick was back at it again, trying different chassis settings, but that did not last long with some rain drops interrupting the day just half an hour later, forcing all riders to return to their pit boxes. Luckily, that was not a lot of rain, meaning no humid track, and sooner than later riders were back at it, with a bit less than 2 hours to go until the red lights. Another 25 laps, including some time attacks towards the end, were done until the alarm calling it for the day. With a best lap in 1’58.523, Viñales takes P16 of the timesheets.
Enea Bastianini was also out at 10:30 this morning, eager to get going. The feeling on the RC16 was not quite as natural as for his teammate at the end of play of day 1, but Roma was not built in one day as an old saying says. On the menu of the day for the Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider was to try a different engine, different chassis settings, a new Michelin front-tyre, as well as continuing to make basic bike’s settings to find confort on the Austrian machine. A total of just 21 laps were ridden before lunch break with a fastest lap in 1’59.964. Bastia was back on track later on at the same time than Viñales, but the work was quickly disrupted by the rain. No worries though as the #23 was back sooner than later on track. He completed a total of 51 laps with a best lap in 1'58.532, to finish in 17th just 0.008 seconds off his teammate. Significant improvement was made for the Italian as he gained one second on his best from yesterday. There’s one more day of work to be done in Sepang tomorrow, we’ll be back at 10:00 local time (GMT+8) for the third and final day of the Sepang Test.
MAVERICK VIÑALES: "We are trying to learn the bike, how it works, how it behaves so we have been doing all this background work today, which is really important for us at the moment, more than trying to get the fastest lap. This bike feels nice to ride, I have enjoyed it again today, and I know that day after day we will understand more and more. For now, we are really focused on this, so let's continue working in that direction tomorrow."
ENEA BASTIANINI: "The adaptation is slow, because this morning, we tried to do something different, but we did not see changes. However, in the afternoon, we made other changes, we tried new parts on the bike, and I think it worked well, this was the start of my progress let's say. Lap after lap we were feeling more confident , and I can be happy at the end of the day. However, I am also aware that we still have a lot of work to do, because I am not really fast with the time attacks. This bike is very different to what I had last year, so I have to learn it and do many laps. Tomorrow will be important as it is our last day, but I am feeling confident that we will continue doing good work."
