Up for one more? The GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 team is too as we have now traveled to the province of Buriram, north-east of Bangkok in Thailand, for the OR Grand Prix of Thailand, which marks the seventeenth stop of 2023, and the last round of October’s tripleheader. After the bad weather conditions in Phillip Island which forced Sunday’s Tissot Sprint to be cancelled, the red crew will hope to find better and warmer conditions in Thailand this week, although the rain is never too far in Buriram.
It was a big disappointment for both Augusto Fernandez and Pol Espargaro not to be able to sprint in front of Aussies on Sunday, especially after their average Saturday’s results. Rookie Augusto Fernandez had made quite an impressive start to his Australian GP campaign as he was second of FP1 on Friday morning, and did not finish far from the direct Q2 places in the Practice. He had shown decent speed all weekend, but unfortunately he crashed in the race, and with the sprint cancelled, he did not get another chance to make things right. For that reason, the GASGAS Tech3 rider is heading to Thailand extra motivated to get back to work and try bringing back to his team a decent result before going home for a well-deserved week of rest. On his side, Pol Espargaro got himself an eleventh place on the grid in Phillip Island, after claiming P5 in Practice, and had high hopes for the race, but unfortunately, a wrong tyre decision in a tricky race saw him going through a big tyre drop, and he finished in P18. If he hopes for better conditions than in Australia and better race results, the Chang International Circuit is another one he will have to reunite with on a Pierer Mobility bike, the last time out being back in 2019.
As we are setting up in a new country and a new time zone, the Thai GP should be a bit easier to follow if you are not planning to travel to the Chang International Circuit. The MotoGP™ show will start on Friday with Free Practice 1 at 10:45 local time (GMT+7), which will be followed by the crucial Practice session of Friday afternoon at 15:00. On Saturday, Augusto Fernandez and Pol Espargaro will fight for a strong grid position when qualifying starts at 10:50, shortly after Free Practice 2 which will see riders hit the track at 10:10. In the afternoon, Thailand fans will be able to watch the first ever Tissot Sprint when lights go out at 15:00. Finally, the main race of the OR Thailand Grand Prix will start at 15:00 on Sunday, for twenty-six laps.
