#AustralianGP - October 22, 2023

Our Australian adventure unfortunately had to come to an end earlier than planned as bad weather conditions at Phillip Island forced the race direction to cancel Sunday’s Tissot Sprint one hour before the show was due to take place.

Since the start of the week, strong winds were expected for Sunday’s showdown, and it is cautiously that the race direction monitored the weather forecast all week. If our first days on the Island were bright and shiny, things got worse as the day went by, forcing decisions to be made urgently for everyone’s safety. As a result of Sunday’s forecast, the main race of twenty-seven laps was moved to Saturday at 15:00 local time (GMT+11), allowing the MotoGP™ class to race in safe conditions. Later on, it was decided to move forward all Sunday’s races, with the Moto3™ race scheduled one hour earlier at 10:00, followed by the Moto2™ at 11:15, which was going to be followed by the Tissot Sprint at 13:00. If the lightweight class was able to race, in tricky conditions though, the intermediate category was shown the red flag due to strong winds. With the conditions expected to worsen, the Tissot Sprint was cancelled. It is a shame that we could not race today, but it was the best decision for the riders safety. Thank you Australia for your warm welcome, as always, we will be back next year! In the meantime, the GASGAS FActory Racing Tech3 team will pack everything and head to Buriram for the next round, the Grand Prix of Thailand, in just one week!

Team Manager
"We know that the weather can be a bit tricky in Australia, and this year was no exception. Although we had amazing weather earlier in the week, a strong wind was expected on Sunday. For that reason, the race direction made the right decision by swapping the Tissot Sprint with the main race yesterday, to ensure that the big show could happen in safe conditions. Luckily the Moto3 class could race today, but the Moto2 race was red-flagged because the wind became too strong. We then knew that it would only get worse, so the Tissot Sprint was cancelled for the safety of all riders. It was of course the right choice, but it is a shame for both Augusto Fernandez and Pol Espargaro who felt strong in the wet warm up this morning, and both really wanted to finish the Australian Grand Prix on a better result after their disappointing races yesterday. Our Australian Grand Prix is coming to an end earlier than expected, so we will start packing as we next head to Thailand, the last round of October’s tripleheader."
