Enea Bastianini just missed out on a points-scoring finish for Red Bull KTM Tech3 in today’s MotoGP™ World Championship Sprint race around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as he fought through the field following a disappointing Qualifying.
Shortly after Tech3 announced a multi-year extension with KTM, the Italian pulled off several overtakes on his way up the order from 14th on the Sprint grid. Aboard the sister KTM RC16, the returning Maverick Viñales was forced out halfway through the 12-lap contest by a technical issue.
Qualifying
After clocking up a total of 24 laps during a chilly FP2 - in which Bastianini placed a solid tenth, with Viñales 0.371s back in 16th - the pair headed into the Q1 phase of Qualifying.
In a fiercely disputed session, ‘La Bestia’ set the early time to beat before bettering his own benchmark. Unfortunately, Bastianini found his efforts to improve from there scuppered by a series of yellow flags, dropping him to fourth as he missed out on progression to Q2 by less than a tenth-of-a-second.
In his first Qualifying session since rejoining the team, ‘Top Gun’ continued to close the gap to the front-runners as he slotted into seventh, only 0.274s behind his team-mate.
Sprint
Bastianini and Viñales duly began the 12-lap Sprint around the 4.66km circuit from 14th and 17th, respectively. The Italian held station at the start, while his Spanish stablemate conceded a spot to run 18th.
In front of packed grandstands, Bastianini subsequently went on the attack, relieving Ai Ogura of 13th on lap three, gaining another place when Jorge Martín crashed, and overhauling Jack Miller and Quartararo in swift succession to move into the top ten.
Once in clean air, the Italian got the hammer down, unleashing top six pace to reel in the pack ahead. Having caught the scrap for sixth, he despatched both Luca Marini and championship leader Marco Bezzecchi to climb into the points in eighth, only to fall to tenth on the final tour.
Viñales unfortunately retired from 17th position at mid-distance, but both riders will go again tomorrow in Sunday’s 24-lap Grand Prix of Catalunya - Round Six of the 2026 MotoGP campaign - which is scheduled to get underway at 14:00 local time (UTC+2).
Enea Bastianini: “To be honest, the problem was Qualifying. I was competitive in Q1 but also a bit unlucky, because I caught two consecutive yellow flags in Turn Five. In the race, my pace was good again and I gained some ground, but by the time we got to the last two laps, I’d destroyed the tyres. Ogura came down the inside which pushed me wide. I tried to stay close to him to re-attack over the last part of the lap, but I lost the front-end in Turn Seven and went wide again, which allowed Bezzecchi to get back past. Still, it’s just the Sprint and we need to stay focused on tomorrow, when we will have twice as many laps to recover positions.”
Maverick Viñales: “After just two or three corners on the warm-up lap, I started to lose the rear brake – oil was spilling out and, in the end, it was impossible to keep my foot on the footrest. That was a shame because I want to do a lot of laps, but physically, I felt quite good and there was no inflammation or strange feeling in my shoulder like I had before. Obviously, I need to build up strength, and the best way to do that is more time on the bike. I still need to adapt it a little bit to suit my riding style after the updates, but it seems to have good traction, which is a positive sign. Tomorrow, my aim is to finish the race so I can continue to accumulate laps.”
Nicols Goyon, Team Manager: “It was a strong Sprint race from Enea after a frustrating Qualifying. He narrowly missed Q2 again, but showed solid speed, charging from 14th up to eighth and producing lap times similar to [Pedro] Acosta. Losing two places on the final lap was disappointing, but overall, his form is promising for tomorrow’s Grand Prix. On the other side of the garage, Maverick is steadily rebuilding his confidence and improving his feeling with the bike. He showed consistent pace before a technical issue forced him to retire. That was frustrating, but the main goal for him is to finish tomorrow’s race and complete his comeback.”
