Born in 2000, Iker Lecuona raced in the FIM CEV Repsol International Championship in Moto2 in 2015 and 2016, with a slew of impressive top five results. His debut in the Moto2 World Championship saw the Spaniard race for the Garage Plus Interwetten team to replace Dominique Aegerter at the minimum age for the category of 16, and Iker remained with the team for 2017, where he scored two points in total.
He stayed with the Swiss outfit for 2018 as they switched to KTM machinery, with Iker securing his first Grand Prix podium at the season finale in Valencia, concluding his second full year on World Championship level in 12th overall with 80 points. In 2019 he scored ten points more, but was recruited by Red Bull KTM Tech3 already for the last round of the season in Valencia, replacing injured Miguel Oliveira.
Thereby, the Spaniard showed an incredible strong debut, improving with each outing until he eventually battled for a top 15 result in his very first race of the premier class. For the 2020 season, Iker will partner Oliveira in a powerful Red Bull KTM Tech3 line-up, riding the factory-spec KTM RC16.
Yet, the MotoGP World Championship rookie experienced a tough beginning of the short season, but landed his first top nine result in Red Bull’s and KTM’s home round in Austria, repeating his strong performance the week after at the same circuit with a 10th position. Scoring regularly since then, Lecuona managed to repeat his personal best result in the premier class in the Alcañiz Grand Prix. He will compete with the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing Team one more time in 2021.
