Mixed weather played a major role in today’s proceedings at the TT Circuit Assen. Tech3 KTM Factory Racing’s Danilo Petrucci used the dry conditions in FP1 this morning well to clock the sixth fastest time, while Iker Lecuona was doing his first laps at the Dutch track on his KTM RC16, finishing in P17.
Just a few minutes into FP2, the rain set in, so the entire MotoGP World Championship field was waiting until the end of the session to go out on their wet settings. Thereby, it was obvious how well the KTM RC16 is working in rainy conditions, as the top 3 lap times on wet tarmac where in the hands of Miguel Oliveira, Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci. The Italian eventually concluded day one in the Netherlands in P9, which means he’ll sit on a provisional direct Q2 entry overnight, while Lecuona was 19th overall.
“It was a positive day. I had a very good feeling on the bike since this morning and we were able to ride quite fast. We have to continue like this as we are in the top 10 at the moment. This obviously is our target for tomorrow in order to have a decent Qualifying and be able to stay with the front group. We don’t know what the weather is going to be like, but we are ready for every condition.”
“It was a strange day regarding the weather, but I’m quite happy. In the morning we worked very well, I learned a lot and we didn’t touch anything on the bike. I improved with each run. In FP2 we changed only the tyre and I felt much better. I did nearly the same lap time like in the morning, going alone. When it started to rain, I went out with the wet setting and felt very strong from the beginning. Although I didn’t find a clean lap, I was fast. I have the feeling, I’m there and I’m pretty happy about this Friday. Tomorrow we will continue to push in FP3.”
