MotoGP rookie Iker Lecuona showed some great progress throughout Saturday at the Gran Premio dell’Emilia Romagna e della Riviera di Rimini. He improved with nearly each session, was working on his race pace in FP4 and eventually equaled his best ever Qualifying result yet with the third fastest time in Q1. With his stunning 1:31.715 he missed out on what could have been a first Q2 by just 0.103 seconds and will start the seventh race of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship season from the fifth row of the grid.

His Red Bull KTM Tech3 teammate Miguel Oliveira, who started the weekend with the eighth fastest time yesterday, went down quite heavily in FP3 this morning, escaped with some bruises and therefore first of all had to regain his confidence during the fourth Free Practice later. In Q1, the Portuguese star ended up just 0.126 seconds behind Lecuona in fifth, which means he will line up in the fifth row as well when the red lights turn off tomorrow at 14:00 local time.

"In FP3 I struggled and found it difficult to improve my lap time. But finally, in FP4 we worked really well with used and harder tyres, which made me truly confident for the Qualifying. On my first run, I was riding behind Zarco and on my second run, I went alone. I still managed to improve my lap time and was again so close to the Q2. I have to say, that I’m very happy anyway. I have a good feeling for tomorrow, we have a good pace for the race, so I look forward to it."

Miguel Oliveira

Position: 15th

Time: 1:31.841

"It was not the best Qualifying for us. After this morning’s crash I lost a bit the feeling and I also hurt my right shoulder a bit. In any case, we went faster than the whole weekend, so we must be happy for that. We have a hard race tomorrow. We know that we are going to suffer a bit, especially because we start from behind. We can only take what we can in tomorrow’s race, score the maximum points as possible, do a clever race. It’s a shame, because we improved our speed a lot from last weekend to this one, but likewise everyone else. We for sure would have liked to do better."
