Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Hafizh Syahrin scored a World Championship Point in an action-packed race at Phillip Island today. The Malaysian, who started from P20 on the grid, worked his way towards the points scoring positions with quick and consistent lap times in the second part of the race and eventually had an exciting battle against Karel Abraham in the last laps. He crossed the line in 15th.
Following a stormy and partly rainy Free Practice three session this morning, both Miguel Oliveira and Hafizh Syahrin decided to play safe and didn’t put in one timed lap. In FP4, the conditions remained unchanged, which lead to a heavy crash of Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Oliveira, who was taken out by the wind while riding at full speed at the end of the main straight. Luckily, the MotoGP rookie escaped the heavy fall without any broken bones, but suffered some strong bruises to his hands and will have to be reviewed by the medical staff tomorrow morning.
The opening day at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit greeted riders and teams today with its typical different seasons in just a few hours. Following a wet Free Practice one, the sun was back out this afternoon for FP2. In addition, all MotoGP riders had another not timed session to evaluate Michelin’s newest development at the Island.
