Both Monster Yamaha Tech3 riders delivered an incredible performance on race day at the Termas de Río Hondo Circuit, taking home phenomenal results.

Johann Zarco came off the line well to fight inside the leading group from the beginning in one of the most exciting races ever. The French star got the very best out of himself to storm to second position, earning the honors of a first podium in 2018 as the top Yamaha rider.

On the other side of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 garage Hafizh Syahrin performed in an outstanding way. The MotoGP rookie made up eight places in just his first lap and was threaded his way through the field of the much more experienced competitors to eventually see the chequered flag as the best rookie in ninth.

Johann Zarco
Position: 2nd - Championship: 3rd - Points: 28

Zarco 2018"It was a pretty difficult race, overall when we had to choose and then the delayed start was quite good for all the riders. Just Jack (Miller) chose the slick from the beginning. From the start there were not so many options for the best line, but behind Dani (Pedrosa) I felt I was stuck, so finally I did the maneuver, tried to overtake him. Because of the conditions I went a little bit wide, but that was the way to pass him. I’m sorry that he crashed there. Overall it was a very difficult race today, I was almost crashing. I did my maximum from the start to the end. In fighting with Cal (Crutchlow), I didn’t want to do a mistake, so in the end, he deserved this win today. I’m really happy, that I was able to catch this second place!"

Hafizh Syahrin
Position: 9
th - Championship: 13th - Points: 9

Syahrin - 2018"I’m so happy about the result today! I pushed really hard all the weekend, the team did a very good job. I felt truly strong this weekend, we only struggled in qualifying, because I didn’t find good grip to stop the bike in a decent way. For the race I was fully motivated, I pushed and when I saw that I was in P15 after the first lap, I was surprised. My pace was really strong and I was able to follow the Factory Yamaha quite easily, but it was difficult to pass the Ducati, because it’s very fast on the straight. I tried it many times, but it was not possible. In the end P9 is a really amazing result for me, I have a fantastic feeling with the team and want to pass my congratulations to Johann for his podium. We are very happy and leave Argentina with a great result. I hope I can do also a good race in Austin and will continue to work hard on myself."

Team Manager

“This was an incredible weekend! It was very tense tough and very difficult to cope with the crazy weather we had here. I think everybody was worried, start delayed, will it rain or not, it was difficult, but to finish a weekend like this in that way, is just unbelievable. The tension was so high. Johann did again an astonishing race, full of speed, but also full of wisdom. He is showing race by race, that he is mastering his emotions, that he is studying his rivals and he did the perfect race, almost perfect, because completely perfect it’s just, when you are winning. I’m very proud of Johann and of the whole crew. Thanks to Yamaha for that great bike they are giving us. Today we almost got that elusive win, we are chasing, but fair play; I think Cal was a little bit stronger. Congrats to him. I can’t stop here without saying huge congratulations to Hafizh Syahrin, who did an exceptional weekend without any mistake. He was just a bit too nervous for the qualifying, so he could not show what he was expecting. But starting from almost last to finish the race in ninth position, fighting with all the factory guys, I think this is something that is going to boost his confidence. I’m very proud of him and I’m very proud to have selected him for the season, because he is showing, that when you have the right attitude coming from this fantastic Moto2 class, you can have a lot of dreams.”

Monster Yamaha Tech3 star Johann Zarco displayed a tactically impressive qualifying performance today in Termas de Río Hondo. With a perfectly timed fast lap towards the end of the second qualifying the Frenchman, who was the best Yamaha rider again today, played his cards excellently on rain tyres to secure the third position and with it his sixth front row start in succession.

Meanwhile, Hafizh Syahrin did well during FP3 and quickly found himself on ease, although the premier class rookie was struggling in Q1, finding it hard to judge the grip level on the half wet and half dry tarmac. The Malaysian will have to tackle the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina from the eighth row of the grid when the red lights go out tomorrow at 15:00 local time for the second race in 2018.

Johann Zarco
Position: 3rd - Time: 1'47.094 - Laps: 7

Zarco 2018"I had the two bikes ready for the time attack, one with slicks and one with rain tyres. I saw the guys going out with slicks, but corner seven and eight were just too wet, so it was complicated. I tried to wait and see the sectors how Jack (Miller) was going and I had to decide quickly before it was too late. I chose the rain tyres, because I knew I felt more comfortable, even if it’s drying out. I was pushing a lot, it’s a good place. I didn’t think it was possible for me to do the same on slicks like Jack did. I’m happy. It’s another opportunity to start well tomorrow and even with the difficult conditions during the sessions, I hope we have enough information to prepare the warm up and be ready for the race."

Hafizh Syahrin
Position: 23
rd - Time: 1’51.142 - Laps: 7

Syahrin - 2018"For me it’s quite hard to adapt myself on the big machine in this kind of conditions. This morning I had a very good pace and a great feeling with the bike, but we tried to change some small things to improve, but finally, my sensation for the grip was not as positive as before. I tried hard to lower my lap time, but I was missing the right feeling. The race tomorrow is for sure not going to be easy, nevertheless I’ll give my best to try to end up as the best rookie."

Johann Zarco and Hafizh Syahrin performed well on day one at the Termas de Río Hondo Circuit, although some rain before FP2 this afternoon delivered tricky conditions at the partly resurfaced track.

Frenchman Zarco initiated the weekend with a considerable lap of 1’40.614 during the first session of the weekend, which secured him the fourth spot in the standings as the fastest Yamaha rider. However, the 27-year couldn’t lower his lap time this afternoon, but finished in 9th position, well placed to go straight to Q2 in case of rain on Saturday morning.

On the other side of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 garage, Syahrin opened his second MotoGP weekend impressively in 11th, less than half a second behind his teammate. Yet, he managed to stay close to the fastest, finishing Friday as the best rookie of the highly-competitive premier class field.

Johann Zarco
Position: 9th - Time: 1'40.614 - Laps: 37

Zarco 2018"This Friday in Argentina was quite difficult and unfortunately, we were not able to improve during FP2, which is complicate. I had to fight a lot with the grip and with the bike and we couldn’t quickly find a good setup to make me feel comfortable. The most important thing was to be inside the top 10 in case of rain tomorrow morning, but if it’s dry, I really need to improve my pace and be more competitive. At the moment I don’t feel I can fight with the fastest guys, but we will work hard to make good progress on Saturday."

Hafizh Syahrin
Position: 17
th - Time: 1’41.094 - Laps: 24

Syahrin - 2018"I felt really good in FP2, but also during the first session this morning. It took quite some time to clean the track, but overall, I just have some great sensations. In the afternoon, the conditions were really tricky. I was pushing a bit too much while trying to get straight into Q2. Finally, this lead into some mistakes, but in the end, I understood what I did wrong. The bike overall feels better and better for me. We’ll take a look at the data in order to improve further for tomorrow and I hope, that I can make one step forward."
